Horses Empowering Youth (HEY)

HEY benefits youth aged 10 – 18, as well as the faculty and staff who support them. All of the experiences within H.E.Y. support positive or improved mental health, personal growth, and leadership development through facilitated experiences. Cohorts are structured so that youth can be seen and heard, and make intentional change.

H.E.Y.  engages the insightful and healing power of horses, natural communicators whose herd dynamics are an essential structure for safety and well-being. Their innate sensitivity and expression naturally engage people deeply; wordlessly inviting us to explore and develop our untold stories with fresh perspectives and meaningful insights. Facilitated sessions are combined with therapeutic art, leadership, and social skills, and grounding activities.

Funding helps provide no-cost services to youth in Allegan County through partnerships with school districts and youth organizations. Entering our fourth successful year of bringing H.E.Y. to Fennville Public Schools (FPS), Red Horse Center is seeking funding towards sustaining the program at FPS and expanding the successful program to other districts and organizations within Allegan County.

Successful outcomes include improving students’ Early Warning Indicator scores, positive mental health, potential for thriving in school and other pursuits, self-confidence and self-reliance, and awareness of support and resources available to them. We believe these programs increase positive outlook and contribute to increasing attendance, engagement, and graduation rates.

Mental Health & Wellness:

Red Horse facilitates mental health and wellness services, including licensed psychotherapy.

Our approach incorporates horses, and nature and is an evidence-based model of care that is especially effective with rural populations. Our farm-based, animal-assisted sessions are trauma-informed and culturally relevant to our community, but they also come with extra costs.

Red Horse Center works through a variable pricing model, to reduce the stigma around financial assistance and allow clients to pay for services within a sliding scale structure.  This approach to reducing or eliminating fees creates opportunities that directly address cost as a barrier to care. Funding this project enables Red Horse to increase the amount of no-cost sessions and partial-cost sessions for clients.

Pride & Ally Community Wellness

The Pride and Ally program consists of facilitated sessions integrating equine-assisted experiential learning, mental health supports, licensed therapy, professional development, therapeutic art, workshops and listening circles in a natural, peaceful setting while engaging horses, dogs, and nature.

Red Horse Center is committed to removing barriers to personal and community wellness, fostering allyship, and contributing to emotionally and physically safe spaces where all are welcome and respected.

Workplace Culture

Our professional development ranges from educational workshops and coaching to team-based retreats, shaped around specific objectives and current issues.

Getting leadership together, offsite in an engaging and psychologically safe environment, is a remedy for stress and burnout while also serves as a catalyst for positive change.

Community Organizations and advocates often struggle to find the time and funding to refresh and restore their vision and relationships, which can be instrumental in retaining talent, improving morale, and clarifying strategic vision.

This program holds space for industry support groups,  team retreats, and workshops supporting workplace culture, shaped by a trauma-informed lens.

Herd Support

Red Horse is committed to providing whole-horse care in support of our herd of specialists, who hold space for human healing and transformation. We work to recognize their needs as specialists, aging horses, and sometimes rescues with unique obstacles and trauma to move through, and provide the best care we can.

Herd Support and horse sponsorships directly impact our ability to provide their essential care, including feed, supplements, hoof trimming, veterinary, chiropractic, and holistic care.

Capacity Building

Red Horse is working year-round to contribute to equitable access to programming for mental health, wellness, and workplace culture. This work is supported by ongoing giving through grants, donations, and sponsorships.

Capacity Building is our default program for unrestricted gifts, which help us spread the love to all programs and everything we do.

Juniper’s Retreat House

In 2025, we received amazing community support that brought Juniper’s Retreat House into our world.  It’s a building that sits on the hill overlooking the Treehouse, as well as Blackjack’s Field, Pride Pasture, and the rolling approach to entering the peaceful space of Red Horse.

We are incredibly grateful, and also have some work in front of us!  We are working on the vision and setup to be ready to offer space to the public by Spring of 2026.  We envision it as a beautiful space to expand our offerings for team retreats, overnight lodging, meeting space, fellowships, events, and even sharing community art, gallery-style.

Support for this program will help us furnish, staff, and prepare the space to offer it to the community.
